Alvina Pernot 2023 –

Domaine visit

I was really looking forward to this visit because I am very familiar with the Paul Pernot wines. Their Puligny-Montrachet Clos de La Garenne has been a cellar favorite of mine together with the Batard-Montrachet which until recently was, lucky us, trading below its peers. So when in 2018 Alvina Pernot, the granddaughter of Paul Pernot, together with husband Philippe Abadie started out on her own after she felt there was not enough space for new ideas, I was interested to get to know her wines as well. Professional reviews have been encouraging from the start and I have bought a few cases IB but never tasted them until today.

The Domaine manages its own vineyards while also sourcing grapes from the family’s extensive holdings in Puligny-Montrachet. The wines are crafted in a new winery built in 2021, with meticulous attention to detail in both the vineyard and cellar. Philipp received us at the new winery and led through today’s tasting with a group of the Confrerie de Chevalier de Tastevin Singapore while Alvina was doing some work int the cellar. I was pleased from the very first glass with the wines. We have a ighter, more precise style than her father. Very classic, not as flinty as Paul Pillot or PVG for example, more middle of the road. Wines that will do well with connoisseurs and a broader clientele. A really good showing today, glad I have a few cases in my cellar.

Tasting Notes

This visit also confirmed that 2023 is a big success in Burgundy. The wines are similar to 2020 and 2022 with generosity but no excesses like in 2018. Luckily it is a large crop as well, so it should not be too difficult to find them once they arrive in the market in 1Q/2025.

Philippe Abadie led through the tasting today with an wonderful line up of 2023 white Burgundy

Village

2023 Alvina Pernot Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Blanc, 93 Points

2023 Alvina Pernot Puligny-Montrachet Clos de Noyers Brets, 91 Points
Barrel sample. Lean and light, with a slightly thin but purist character. Good length. 90–92.

Premier Crus

2023 Alvina Pernot Meursault 1er Cru La Pièce-sous-le-Bois, 92 Points
Barrel sample. Rich and ripe with a touch of fatness, showing ripe lemon and good weight. 91–93.

2023 Alvina Pernot Meursault 1er Cru Le Poruzot, 94 Points
Barrel sample. Fantastic wine with great acidity and vibrant yuzu lemon. Intensely mineralic and showing beautifully today. Very showy. 93–95.

2023 Alvina Pernot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Garenne, 94+ Points
Barrel sample. Ripe lemon with great energy and pronounced minerality. Composed and refined, though outshone slightly by the Poruzot. Still an excellent wine. 94–95.

2023 Alvina Pernot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos des Folatières, 94 Points
Barrel sample. Softer and fruitier than Clos de la Garenne, with floral and feminine qualities. 93–95.

2022 Alvina Pernot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos des Folatières, 94 Points
We tasted this later during a lunch. Consistent to the style we saw at the Domaine, very much in the elegant house style. Light, but not thin. Fresh but not reductive. Caressing and elegant.

2023 Alvina Pernot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles, 95 Points
Barrel sample. Very elegant and fine, with cool, precise, and composed character – a quintessential Puligny. While the Poruzot was showy today, this is undeniably refined. 94–96.

Grand Crus

2023 Alvina Pernot Bâtard-Montrachet, 96 Points
Barrel sample. Richer and more powerful than Les Pucelles, with long and composed flavors. A light but well-structured Bâtard. Grande! 95–97.

2023 Alvina Pernot Corton-Charlemagne, 95 Points
Domaine visit, barrel sample. Lovely sucrosité balanced by elegance and freshness. Floral and refined, making it a versatile and appealing wine.
